Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun (1999)

This has to be the most accessible Boredoms record that I have heard so far. Often, EYヨ and company can reach way our far. Sometimes catching small pieces of heaven and showing us what it sounds like. Other times they reach a bit further and try to break our eardrums. This album is moving away from some of the harsher noise, and more into tribal, psychedelia, freakout music. It's sometimes even meditative. This album sounds exceptionally great in my headphones, while laying in the grass at the park.

Cult Ritual ‎– LP1 (2009)

I am way late to the party on this massive, hard-hitting epic fucking record. It literally deserves all of those words. Gut-punching riffs over thunderous beats, so much feedback, and the howls of a lunatic. I fucking love this record. This Floridian quartet regrettably only lasted about 3 years. They all went on to do a million other bands, that will eventually make their way here. Grab this, slam-dance your ass off, and feel good.

The Ex - Disturbing Domestic Peace (1980)

It's ridiculously eerie just how familiar this album feels, as if all of the lyrics and subject matter are still relevant here and now in 2021? Anyway, this is the Dutch Punks debut record and it kicks right out of the gates. It's 28 minutes of piss and vinegar, scratchy, bass-heavy truths, spitting them right in your face. The Ex went on to create wild Punk-World-Fusion, that I honestly believe The Police were attempting to channel, before all of the money and love songs kicked in. Do your ears a favor and spin this. Preferably while wearing a torn leather jacket and drinking a beer.

clipping. - Visions of Bodies Being Burned (2020)

I'm having a difficult time trying to review this group. I will say that they really do live up to their name with those noisy ass harsh beats always pushing the red. The 'beats' are definitely interesting and Diggs delivers perfectly over what some have described as the sounds of glass in a blender. I like it. It's possible some of their tracks could be released as a single, and possibly even see radio play, but the rest are way the fuck out there space jams. I don't want to make comparisons to anyone, because this shit is really that fresh and different. Grab it, spin it, blow you mind.

Standard Grey & km: (2019)

Muzan Editions has been releasing a series of amazing drone/ambient albums for the better half of 4 years now. This collection presents 4 beautiful tracks, originally released on a 100 tape run in the winter of 2019. Side A features Standard Grey’s 25 minute mind-melting trip that helps dissolve any problem you thought you were experiencing. Side B shows km:’s scattered brained 3 track noise experiments, that further help you to forget those troubles.

There were a number of tapes released during the winter of 2019 that are all worth mentioning, and will eventually make their way here. The collection has long since been sold out, and it’s easy to see why. Their bandcamp does offer a name your price, so if you’re feeling the tracks go on and slide over there and check the label out. It’s well worth the time for lovers of ambient/drone.

The Jesus Lizard - Head/Pure (1990)

I decided to share 2 at once. The Jesus Lizard flew way under my radar in my early years. It's a damn shame considering I'm from Chicago, where they spent a large chunk of their time gigging. I shit the bed on that. These efforts were later packaged together, although they both stand firm and strong on their own. The tracks are similar sounding in nature. They're heavy, crunchy, with Yow gurgling on the microphone like a fucking lunatic. These first recordings are genius noise in my opinion.

Swans - Filth (1983)

Here be Swans first effort, and many argue their heaviest. It does have some ridiculous crunch. It's not as assessible as their more recent albums (circa 2000-present). But it's still a darkly, pleasing debut nonetheless. For me it feeds a very brutal, and aggressive part of my brain. It churns up something deep inside my stomach, and pokes and provokes all the fury laying dormant. Driving with this at full volume in mid-day traffic is fucking terrific.

:zoviet*france: - Mohnomishe (1983)

Presented here is a slow bubbling collection of ambient tracks, bordering on noise, madness, and sometimes uneasy feelings. It is so incredibly easy to get lost listening to this album, especially if you're sitting in your own living room. It's a deep listening experience to say the least. This revolving group of nerdy, mostly English chaps make some strange, sometimes dark ambient madness. Besides the music itself being pretty unconventional and hard to pigeonhole, their packaging for releases is also strange as well. Instead of standard printed cardstock/cardboard presentations, the group insist upon handcrafting original works of art on a smallish scale. Opting for using a variety of screen-printed materials, sometimes yarn or thread, dyed muslin and other fabrics, which I feel adds an evermore outsider aesthetic. Reissues opted for easier reproduction and more commercial friendly methods, which is cool too. Grab this, strap yourself into your favorite assgroove and blast off!

ANMA - Kitahama Ghosts (2019)

This recording is full of white noise, mixed with big atmospheres, dissonance and empty spaces. This was released on cassette and I am really into the tape revival. I think there's something romantic about it. The more you listen, the better the chances are at stretching the tape and creating a whole different experience, or just reducing it to total shit, it all depends I guess.

I remember as a kid saving up $18.00 and visiting our local Goldblatts with my Aunt to buy my first Walkman. I was so stoked. I dubbed over weirdo sound collages on any cassette I could get my hands on. Take the advice on the cover and listen during a rain storm. It's beautiful.

Inca Ore ‎– A Knit Of My Own Fibers / When You're Sleeping I Tell You Secrets (2005)

Lush ambiance meets ghostly voices. This album came to me at the most appropriate time in my life. Even to this day when I listen to it, the word unraveling comes to mind. Good for early morning/late night listening.
